Paessler Web Server Stress Tool Helps WCIX.Net Prepare For Increased Web Site Traffic

Portland, OR — July 10, 2006

Paessler today announced their Webserver Stress Tool helped WCIX.Net’s IT team prepare for a dramatic increase in Web site traffic.

WCIX was called on to host a large volume of downloadable video files for a conference led by one of its clients and needed to find a web server test application to ensure their web servers would handle 8,000 simultaneous users downloading 100 MB to 1,200 MB video files that were encoded at 1 mbps bit rate.

Dennis Nugent, president WCIX.Net, and his colleagues were confident their network could support the high-volume traffic. However, Nugent said, the team thought they would perhaps encounter an issue with the performance of their hard drives and web server software.

Nugent added that, in the past, WCIX.Net’s IT team had tried using two freeware packages as web server test applications and found that neither of them provided the full-scale analysis WCIX.Net required.

Nugent and his colleagues selected Paessler’s Webserver Stress Tool as their web server test application to simulate high-volume usage and identify critical performance problems on their web servers as they supported the heavy conference-related traffic.

The IT team proceeded to evaluate various web server test applications on the market, including Paessler’s Webserver Stress Tool. WCIX.Net selected the Paessler solution, in part, because of its competitive pricing and the “ease of installation” and “operation of the demo software,” Nugent said. The “overriding factor,” however, in the team’s decision to select Paessler’s web server test application was its ability to “quickly test” all of WCIX.Net’s servers, Nugent said.

WCIX.Net’s team members then implemented Paessler’s Webserver Stress Tool into its robust production environment.

Specifically, Nugent and his colleagues installed Paessler’s web stress tool software on a dual Xeon server with 2 GB Ram, Windows 2003 Enterprise operating system, fiber Gigabit card and connected the server via fiber to a Cisco router that was connected to the Internet with multiple gigabit connections. The web servers to be tested were in various data centers — connected to the Internet via Cisco routers — and also with multiple gigabit connections. Team members tested web server performance over the Internet at speeds of up to 500 mbps prior to going into production. They also tested servers in Dallas and San Jose, Calif., from their main data center in San Jose and servers in London, Atlanta, New York, and Chicago from their main data center in Ashburn, Virginia.

The WCIX.Net IT team used Paessler’s Webserver Stress Tool to both efficiently and effectively test 18 servers in eight locations over the Internet at speeds of up to 500 mbps in less than eight hours. The solution allowed the team to prepare for 8,000 simultaneous users downloading 100 MB to 1,200 MB video files for their client’s conference.

WCIX.Net, Inc. provides a broad range of business connectivity, Internet bandwidth, IP transit, and secure online backup services to clients throughout the U.S. The WCIX.Net team has provided large-scale Internet connectivity since 1995. The bandwidth infrastructure for WCIX.Net includes multiple cross-connects to Tier-1 providers in major POPs through-out the US, and London.

Founded in 1997 and headquartered in Fuerth, Germany, Paessler AG builds cost-effective German-engineered software that is both powerful and easy to use. Its products cover network monitoring as well as testing and are used by more than 90,000 network administrators, web site operators, Internet service providers and other IT professionals worldwide. Computer Expert Declares Personal Computer Files Are ?At Risk?

Computer Expert Declares Personal Computer Files Are “At Risk”

Omaha, NE — September 28, 2006 -–

Computer expert Cliff Peterson, a principal in http://www.backuptotheweb.com, an online backup service, said today that most personal computer users are risking their valuable data without being aware of it.

With the constant news about viruses and spyware, Peterson said, many people aren’t focusing on a more immediate threat – the total loss of their personal files. He labeled “unacceptable” the risk that the vast majority of people take every day.

The risk, Peterson pointed out in a recent interview, comes from fire, theft, weather, the imminent failure of hard drives and the accidental deleting of valuable files. “These are risks that can be avoided, but fewer than ten percent of computer owners take any precautions at all,” he said.

As for the low rate of precautions, Peterson said that people were either “unfamiliar with the risks or unaware of the benefits.”

“Either way, the results can range from inconvenient to catastrophic,” he said. Further, “most people will have at least a minor problem with data loss within the next year.” Some, he said, “will fare far worse”.

At the top of the list, Peterson said, is the accidental loss of data due to errors. “How often have you accidentally deleted a manuscript, a digital photo or a tax file that you shouldn’t?” Even more of a problem, he said, are the times “you deleted whole sections of manuscripts and saved the file, only to discover you needed the deleted sections.”

The answer to both questions, Peterson said, is to set up some sort of a backup plan. “In Windows, always remember your recycle bin – it can save you hours of work recreating a lost document.” He reminded everyone that taking a daily backup, then keeping it in a safe place “can solve most of your problems with file loss.”

Peterson also addressed the theft issue. “If someone steals your computer, you can recover your data from your backup files,” he said. “But that’s assuming the thief didn’t steal your backups, too!” Peterson said that often happens if you store your backup files near your computer, or worse yet, you’re storing your backups on another hard drive in the same computer.

Fire and weather can also wreck both your computer and your backups if you don’t separate them, Peterson said. “Make backups often, then remove them from your home or office. If you’re in an area subject to large calamities like hurricanes, you should ship or mail the backups out of the danger zone.”

He addressed one more issue – the loss of your backup files to theft. Peterson asked, “What if someone steals your backup files? Can they get your credit card data or your social security number?” His solution – keep your backup files in a safe place, or even better, encrypt them. If you take the time to secure them with encryption, even if they’re stolen, they are useless to the thief, he said. “Many good backup programs use encryption – remember to turn it on.”

Why don’t people follow this advice? Peterson said that people have good intentions, but “it’s time-consuming, boring, and, above all, ‘it won’t happen to me’.”

Peterson encouraged computer users to make the effort. “It’s like insurance – you don’t see the need until disaster strikes – then it’s too late,” he said.

As CompUSA Steps Away from the Puget Sound, One Local Computer Store Steps Up Expert Service and Product Availability for Area Businesses and Residents

As CompUSA Steps Away from the Puget Sound, One Local Computer Store Steps Up Expert Service and Product Availability for Area Businesses and Residents

Lynnwood, WA — May 8, 2007

As the big box retailer shuts 126 of its stores amid nationwide restructuring, only the Portland, OR and Spokane, WA stores will be left open to service the Pacific Northwest. But the big box retailer’s existing local customers won’t necessarily need to drive to the next state or seek purchasing, technical guidance, and emergency support via tedious phone menus or cryptic, online FAQ files.

One local retailer, Computer Sonics, a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner with store locations in Tukwila and Lynnwood, is ready to step up both expert service and product availability for area businesses and consumers. Besides offering Puget Sound residents and businesses a complete selection of computer hardware, software, and accessories seven days a week, they also provide expert consulting, service, maintenance, and troubleshooting as needed, or on a routine on-site basis.

“Where CompUSA saw a need to close stores, we see a need to service customers,” says Nasir Ali, Computer Sonics’ feisty owner-operator. “Big box retailers come and go, but we’re part of the community and here to stay. We pride ourselves on friendly face-to-face help around your schedule, including drop off, pick up, or on-site visits.”

In an age of big box retailing “Goliaths,” Ali is a modern-day “David” slinging stones at corporate orthodoxy which he feels shortchanges the customer. To ensure that business customers speak with a knowledgeable advocate each time there’s an issue and not a series of uniformed parties, Ali assigns each a dedicated account manager. Similarly, he quickly replaced a phone menu system with live phone operators when customer response dictated a need for it.

According to Ali, many computer problems are the result of hardware/software conflicts or compatibility errors, which should be resolved at the point of purchase or expertly troubleshot.

“Too often, people buy the ‘latest and greatest’ without thought or they google a product based only on price,” says Ali. “When it doesn’t work or it crashes the system, they realize it wasn’t money well spent.” Working with the customer, this local retailer uses a “measure twice, cut once” philosophy. “We try to determine what they truly need, whether their current hardware and software supports it, and what the best, most cost effective alternatives may be.”

Even when Ali’s “measure twice, cut once” philosophy isn’t followed, this local business is there to pick up the pieces. When a local mortgage broker’s customer database crashed, for instance, the broker’s regular freelance technology consultant was on vacation. Emergency shipping the downed computer server to the original equipment manufacturer for repair would’ve taken a minimum of several days, during which time the company would’ve been essentially non-operational without critical data.

When this Seattle computer store was called to action, they loaned the mortgage broker a temporary server and restored data to get the company operational within three hours. Within 24 hours, they’d built the mortgage broker a replacement server so the company would be fully operational.

“Most people and small businesses are neglecting to adequately back up critical data, whether it’s irreplaceable family photos, email, customer data, or costly music files,” cautions Ali. “Eventually the system crashes and their precious data or memories are gone, unless properly backed up.”

For maximum convenience and reliability today, Ali recommends an automatic backup system such as the secure, online backup service his company provides on a systematic basis, as determined by the needs of the customer. Because the local computer store deals with all major hardware and software makers, it can expedite system set up, installation, and maintenance, including the resolution of hardware/software issues and software licensing.

Survey Indicates Most Consumers Seek Better User Experience for Internet Services

Posted by Bradley Smith on June 26th, 2011

Survey Indicates Most Consumers Seek Better User Experience for Internet Services

Montreal, Canada — July 25, 2007

Survey results released today from Radialpoint indicate that most Internet subscribers would favor a single consistent user experience for all Internet services that would guide them through the process of discovering, acquiring, and using new services from their ISP.

Over 70 percent of Internet subscribers surveyed said they would be inclined to use a centralized desktop management tool for all their Internet services, and a further 68 percent would be more likely to consider their ISP first when looking to purchase or add new services if such a tool were made available. The online survey, conducted for Radialpoint by Itracks, polled 1000 Internet subscribers in North America.

According to the survey, lack of awareness of ISP-provided services is a key barrier to service adoption for Internet subscribers. Nearly half of subscribers polled were unaware of online security services provided by their ISP, almost 70 percent did not know if their ISP provided music or gaming services, and nearly one third did not know if their ISP provided any services beside Internet access and email.

When respondents were asked which services they would purchase if their ISP could add them to their monthly bill at a competitive price, and take care of the installation and all updates over the Internet for them, respondents indicated the following:

41 percent would purchase Security services (anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall)
30 percent would purchase online Music and Gaming services
29 percent would purchase ID Theft and Fraud Insurance
22 percent would purchase Video-on-Demand services
20 percent would purchase Online Backup services or Internet Phone services

Nearly half of respondents indicated that they would be more likely to stay with their ISP if their ISP provided a better user experience to discover, acquire, and use these services on an ongoing basis.

The survey also found that while consumers are interested in a multitude of online services, they still have issues purchasing these from sources other than their ISP. Over 40 percent cited concerns about the trustworthiness of online sources for the purchase of software or services, 36 percent were uncomfortable with providing credit card information online, over 30 percent disliked constant update reminders, and nearly 20 percent found it difficult to recall the status of software or services already purchased. Remembering a multitude of passwords and issues with software/service cross-compatibility were also cited as concerns for online users.

“For ISPs, an integrated and optimal end-user experience is clearly essential to delivering successful Internet services programs,” said Hamnett Hill, CEO of Radialpoint. “To offset decreasing Internet access revenues and to increase average-revenue-per-user (ARPU), ISPs need to offer the value-added services (VAS) that consumers want. This survey clearly underscores that consumers would prefer to purchase VAS from their ISP if they have an understanding of available services, a more efficient subscription and ordering process, a simpler setup and activation process, and a single application to view and manage all Internet or ISP-related tasks.”

Radialpoint, the leading provider of managed Internet services to the world’s largest ISPs, will be introducing its VAS Management Platform™ (VMP™) at the CTAM Summit 07 in Washington DC, July 23rd.

Radialpoint’s VMP™ is a flexible scalable environment for managing the delivery of Internet VAS, orchestrating subscriber interaction, and analyzing the effectiveness of all VAS programs. The VMP™ includes:

VAS Desktop Container: Provides subscribers with a single point of control across all selected services to guide them through the processes of discovering, acquiring, and using new services from their ISP.
VAS Messaging: Empowers ISPs to deliver rich messages to targeted subscriber PCs.
VAS Fulfillment: Simplifies and automates the process of subscribing for and activating services, minimizing breakage points and increasing service usage.
VAS Intelligence: Captures and analyzes detailed VAS business intelligence to provide ISPs actionable metrics on the in-market performance.

Online Data Backup Solutions, ISO 17799 and ISO 27001 Plus an OPEN Line of Storage Arrays Stand Out Among Peers

Online Data Backup Solutions, ISO 17799 and ISO 27001 Plus an OPEN Line of Storage Arrays Stand Out Among Peers

Norwalk, CT — July 26, 2007

Phantom Data Systems Inc. announced the launch of PhantomStor®, an online backup solution for organizations to backup their data without the high initial capital outlay of an enterprise system.

PhantomStor® server farms are always available to meet the needs of any organization size, from small applications to projects containing millions of emails, databases, configurations and the like.

PhantomStor®’s network architects constantly monitor the overall performance and utilization to ensure network bandwidth, server utilization, and consumed storage capacities never exceed fifty percent utilization. Maintaining additional system capacity gives you the flexibility to add to your repository as you see fit.

PhantomStor® stores all of your corporate information on our highly redundant Storage Area Network, utilizing fiber-channel storage arrays, to guarantee the fastest data transfer in the industry. “Partnering with Intronis Technologies and leveraging SUNGARD DATA SERVICES as a mirrored environment has enabled us unify the absolute best of breed players in the industry,” said Alani Kuye, Managing Partner of the IT Security and Storage Hardware Vendor.

Magnetic storage provides instantaneous access to your data and has no “time-to-data” latency associated with optical disc and CD based solutions. We have also included with PhantomStor®, the option to implement an On Site Storage array or an appliance from one of our partners to handle the network automation. This aggregates the files to be replicated (backed up) and transfers on a set schedule. “Think of it as a Network Backup Appliance, which in reality it really is at the hardware level” added Andriy Pehknik, Managing Partner. This gives clients the option to choose between a low monthly fee for automated backups, or a Network Backup Appliance.

Our Storage products stand out. First, in capacity. Starting where other NAS products leave off, capacity ranges from 500 GB to 2.4 TB. Second, in maintainability, since even our slimline 1U case has drives in drawers. Third, value. You’re well away from five figure prices with these high-end, ATAPI appliances.

With a common browser based administration interface, the OPENBOX®, OPENRAID®, and FIRERAID® can be up and running in less than 30 minutes! The very first appliance that encourages you to literally open up the appliance not only to see what is inside, but also perform routine maintenance tasks. Though it comes optimized for the most demanding environment, the OPENBOX® literally scales to allow direct access to ALL components.

“We have our hardware clients who simply want an OPENRAID® RAID Array for added data storage capacity or any of our other hardware appliances. But then, there are the thousands of businesses out there that just can’t shell out thirty five thousand dollars for a solution, hence an online automated system with a low monthly plan — PhantomStor®,” quipped Alani Kuye.

Multiple high-speed telecommunication lines to various Points-of-Presence (POP’s) ensure high performance and provide maximum fault-tolerance in the event of telecommunication network failure. Backup power sources provide redundant electrical supply in the event of natural disasters or power failures, ensuring 99.9% uptime GUARANTEE!

Plans start around $ 40.00 (forty dollars) and go as high as $ 5,000.00 (five thousand dollars) per month. PhantomStor®’s powerful, feature-rich interface, an unwavering commitment to security, and our dedication to quality and customer service make outsourced backup solutions a reality for any organization.

Carbonite Expands Boston Data Center

Boston — January 24, 2008

Carbonite Inc., the leading provider of online backup services to consumers and small businesses, announced today it has signed a lease with the Markley Group to triple the floor space of its Boston data center. The expanded space will allow Carbonite to continue its current customer growth rate through the end of 2008, by which time it expects to have other data centers in operation.

“Even though disks and other equipment are getting smaller and data densities are increasing rapidly, we still need a lot more space to handle our rapidly growing customer base. So we are expanding the size of our Boston data center by a factor of three,” said Carbonite CEO David Friend. “We’ve been very happy with our relationship with the Markley Group. We get the benefit of very sophisticated building security – 24 hour guard, fingerprint ID, uninterruptable power, and so forth. We also benefit from low-cost access to multiple Internet backbones with automatic failover in the event that our primary carrier has problems. Later this year we’ll be opening data centers in other cities, but meanwhile we now have enough space in our Boston data center to carry us through 2008.”

Carbonite’s Boston data center is located in New England’s largest and most secure commercial facility, managed by the Markley Group. Since acquiring the Boston building, Markley has invested more than $ 46 million in the One Summer Street facility, developing it into the preeminent data center/telecommunications facility in the entire New England region. It features separate AC power feeds from multiple power companies and has uninterruptable diesel backup power. The facility is guarded 24 hours per day, seven days per week and requires fingerprint ID and document presentation to gain entry.

Carbonite Online PCBackup™ installs with just a few clicks and runs quietly in the background, continuously backing up all data files. It is completely automatic – once installed, Carbonite finds all new and changed files and continues to back them up whenever the PC is connected to the Internet. Storage capacity is unlimited – users never outgrow their Carbonite subscription no matter how much data they have. Carbonite never interferes with the speed of the user’s PC or Internet browsing. Data is encrypted before leaving the local computer and is transmitted to Carbonite’s secure data center using HTTPS (SSL) for total privacy.

About Carbonite

Carbonite launched its Online PCBackup™ service in May 2006. Carbonite’s industry-first offer of unlimited backup space for a flat low price revolutionized the market for consumer and small business backup services. So far the company has backed up more than 2.5 billion files, has restored more than 160 million lost files for its customers and has a large data center where capacity is measured in petabytes. There are Carbonite users in nearly 100 countries.

Founded in 2005, Carbonite believes that computer users should not have to think about backup. The company’s mission is to provide an affordable, reliable, secure and easy-to-use solution for the mainstream computer user. Carbonite is available to consumers and small business through numerous channels, including its corporate Web site, major US retailers and international distributors.
